Introduction

I recently changed my car, so I had to go through the whole VEP tag process again. Although I went through the VEP tag process not long ago, as I shared in my previous post. I wasn’t quite looking forward to it, thinking it’d be the same old lengthy chore. However, to my delight, obtaining my Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) this time at the My VEP Centre in Woodlands was significantly better.

In this post I’ll walk you through what I did, what’s changed since last time, and why I think the process is far smoother now. If you’re a Singapore-registered vehicle owner crossing into Malaysia this may save you some hassle.

My Experience: Car Change → Online Application → Collection

  • Because I got a new car, I had to apply for a new VEP tag.
  • I started with an online application via the official portal (as required).
  • To my surprise, this time the tag collection appointment was available the following week.
    Previously, it took much longer.
  • When I went to the My VEP Centre Woodlands, located at: 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5, #03-01, Singapore 757515.
  • I found that the layout, steps, and environment looked largely the same as before (so familiar) — but it felt faster and more efficient.

What’s Changed (and Why It Matters)

  • Tag collection & installation: Previously, after they pasted the VEP-RFID sticker, I had to take a photo of the tag on my car, upload it, and wait for approval. This time around, they did everything for me at the centre — tag installation, validation, photo upload verification — all on the spot. I was told I could literally drive into Malaysia immediately after.
  • Touch ’n Go eWallet link-up: Last time, after tag installation, my Touch ’n Go (TnG) account didn’t successfully connect with the VEP sticker (so when I entered Malaysia, I still had to use the physical card). This time, I drove into Johor Bahru (JB) on the same day, and the tolls detected my tag and deducted it from my TnG account seamlessly. It felt like magic compared with before.

Why This Matters for You

If you want to drive into Malaysia (for work, leisure or family), these improvements mean:

  • Less waiting time for the tag collection and activation.
  • Better certainty that the moment you cross into Malaysia the tolls will work via your TnG wallet.
  • Fewer DIY steps (no more chasing photo uploads etc if done at the centre).
  • Reduced risk of fines or delays at the border (compliance already emphasised).
  • A smoother cross-border experience, especially if you go often with family or for weekend drives.

Practical Tips Based on My Visit

  • Book your slot at the My VEP Centre Woodlands as soon as your online application is approved.
  • Please bring all required documents, including the confirmation slip and the owner’s NRIC/passport.
  • Opt for the in-person collection at Woodlands if you can — the faster turnaround may make it worth the S$39 service fee (if applicable).
  • Before your first trip into Malaysia after installation, top up your TnG eWallet and check that the tag is functioning (look out for immediate toll detection).
  • Keep your confirmation slip/email even after collection. It may be useful if there are any issues.
  • Check the expiry of your tag: The VEP RFID tag is valid for five years.

My Verdict

Overall, my second time through the VEP process at the My VEP Centre Woodlands felt much less of a chore and far more like a routine entitlement. The biggest upgrade? The seamless linking with my Touch ’n Go wallet and the fact that once I crossed into JB, tolls just worked. That alone made the difference.

If you’ve been holding off on applying because you heard horror stories of delays, I’d say now is a good time — the system appears to have matured and improved.

Final Takeaway

Upgrading your car doesn’t have to mean upgrading your stress. With the VEP process now more efficient, you can focus on the fun part of driving across the Causeway instead of worrying about bureaucracy. Get your myVEP sorted, head into JB, and let the tolls just deal themselves with — you’ve got better things to enjoy.

Drive safe, and happy road-tripping!
